Amrut Bang has led the NIRMAN initiative since 2008 and is involved in shaping up the strategy, building partnerships, recruitment, fund raising, and project management. Bring together an unwavering passion for diabetes care and education with sheer commitment of improving the
lives of diabetics, which is what Dr. Sunil Gupta, is all about. As on 6th June 2020, he has organized and contributed towards 2181 programs (918 Hello Diabetes Education Programs for diabetics, 884 Continuous Medical Education programs for doctors, 330 Diabetes Screening Camps, 49 Diet Exhibitions and 221 mass education programs through AIR & TV) since last 25 years; i.e. 78 programs/year or 1.5 programs/week.
This has directly aided 3,14,507 Medical Professionals and 1,60,030 Diabetics and their care takers. Through his mass education Hello Diabetes campaign, lakhs of rural & urban populations of discrete culture, teachers, Juvenile Diabetics, school students, dieticians, nurses, Pharmacists, Government officials, NGOs, MNCs, Banks, LIC, WCL, MECL, MOIL, Railways, police community, CRPF Jawans, Journalists, and even jail mates have been benefited.
Prakash Baba Amte is a social worker from Maharashtra, India. Amte and his wife, Mandakini Amte, were awarded the Magsaysay Award for 'Community Leadership' in 2008 for their philanthropic work in the form of the Lok Biradari Prakalp amongst the Madia Gonds in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra and the neighbouring states of Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. In November 2019 he was awarded with ICMR Lifetime Achievement Award by Bill Gates.
Amte is the son of Magsaysay awardee Baba Amte. He obtained a medical degree from Government Medical College (GMC), Nagpur.
In 1973, Amte moved to Hemalkasa to start the Lok Biradari Prakalp, a project for the development of tribal people, most of whom were the Madia Gond in the forests of Gadchiroli district. He lived and worked there for almost twenty years performing emergency surgical procedures without electricity. The project transformed into a hospital, Lok Biradari Prakalp Davakhana, a residential school, Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram Shala, and an orphanage for injured wild animals, the Amte's Animal Park. The project provides health care to about 40,000 individuals annually. The Lok Biradari Prakalp Ashram School has over 600 students, residents and day scholars.
Amte has published two autobiographies, Prakashvata (Pathways to Light), originally written in Marathi and now translated into English, Gujarati and Kannada, and Raanmitra (Jungle Friends).
